Fall Beauties Prized in both China and Japan
Highly regarded in ancient Chinese culture, they were one of the “four gentlemen” in the world of flowers, along with plum blossoms, orchids and bamboo.
You know, I’ve never thought of chrysanthemums (“mums” to many gardeners) as little gentlemen, but I’d be willing to bet the foursome would make an admirable Tumblr illustration.
In any case, this write-up does a fine job of shining a light on the history of the flouncy flowers, skipping along between their use as herbal remedies in ancient China and through to the Japanese “ozukuri” we know so well at the NYBG. The chrysanthemum may be so much more than gold these days—hybridization tends to alter the traditional—but it’s nonetheless a classic.
You’ll find fall’s chrysanthemum display popping up in the Perennial Garden and the Home Gardening Center this year, with more to come in the way of Kiku later on. —MN
